MOQBA Events

MOQBA certifies tournaments that promote high quality quizbowl. MOQBA certified tournaments aim to improve Missouri quizbowl by:

  • Using questions that fairly reward more knowledgeable teams, and are devoid of gimmicks and trickery that discourage players. In a MOQBA certified tournament, players are rewarded for their academic knowledge rather than for winning a buzzer race or knowing something trivial.
  • Promoting participation. MOQBA tournaments are required to have more rounds than the typical Missouri tournament, encouraging all teams to keep playing instead of sending them home after as little as three rounds. Consequently, this means that teams actually play on the questions they pay for.

Hosting an MOQBA Certified Event

MOQBA is committed to supporting tournaments that meet the guidelines for MOQBA certification. We encourage all teams to work with MOQBA to obtain certification for their events.

Hosting a tournament of your own can benefit the game significantly. In addition to providing another much-needed avenue for teams to compete, the money you will raise allows your team to expand and compete in more tournaments. While the work involved can seem daunting, MOQBA is pleased to be able to make your job easier by facilitating tournament preparations, allowing you to contribute to the growth of quizbowl in Missouri by providing teams a successful, high quality tournament.

We are pleased to offer a number of perks alongside MOQBA certification. Information about your tournament will be featured on this website and in future iterations of the MOQBA Newsletter, increasing your tournament's exposure and allowing you to draw additional teams. Also, MOQBA will assist you in your pre-tournament planning; the collective MOQBA membership has hosted dozens of successful tournaments and will be happy to answer any questions you may have. MOQBA also expects that it will be able to provide your tournament at least one MOQBA member to volunteer on tournament day itself, helping your tournament run as smoothly as possible. Certification Criteria for the 2009-2010 season

Questions

  • Questions used must be pyramidal and well-written. Pyramidal questions contain several clues arranged in decreasing difficulty. If questions are not provided by a reputable vendor, MOQBA will need to review sample questions to ensure that they meet this criterion.
  • Inclusion of math computations is highly discouraged, but at this time will not disqualify a tournament from consideration.
  • Tossup/bonus format is preferred, but other formats, including MSHSAA format, will be considered.

Tournament scheduling

  • MOQBA prefers round-robin schedules and an appropriate playoff. However, tournaments that use a single-elimination bracket will be considered.

Guaranteed rounds

  • A tournament in MSHSAA format should guarantee each team in attendance at least 4 rounds.
  • A tournament in the 20 tossup/bonus format should guarantee each team in attendance at least 6 rounds.
  • All other formats will be decided on a case-by-case basis.

Total number of rounds

  • A tournament in MSHSAA format should have a total of at least 7 rounds.
  • A tournament in the 20 tossup/bonus format should have a total of at least 9 rounds.
  • All other formats will be decided on a case-by-case basis.
